National Highways (NH)
Authority: Managed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Purpose: Connect major cities, ports, capitals, and important economic centers across states.
Examples: NH-44 (Srinagar to Kanyakumari), NH-48 (Delhi to Chennai)
State Highways (SH)
Authority: Constructed and maintained by the State Public Works Departments (PWD).
Purpose: Connect state capitals to district headquarters and major towns within the state

Major District Roads (MDR)
Authority: Maintained by the state government or local authorities.
Purpose: Connect district headquarters to talukas and tehsils; also link to state highways or national highways.
Other District Roads (ODR)
Authority: Local bodies or state PWDs.
Purpose: Provide connectivity between rural areas and markets, towns, or block headquarters.

Village Roads (VR)
Authority: Managed by Panchayati Raj institutions or rural development departments.
Purpose: Provide access to villages and remote rural areas.
Expressways
Authority: NHAI or State Governments (depending on the project).
Purpose: High-speed, access-controlled roads designed for faster traffic movement with no at-grade crossings.
Examples: Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, Yamuna Expressway
